Expanding Heathrow
A WPI Economics Analysis
Heathrow commissioned WPI Economics to assess the potential economic impacts of green-lighting Heathrow expansion between 2016 and 2020.
Debates on infrastructure investment typically focus on the longer-term economic impacts as large-scale construction is taken forward. However, we found that the short-term benefits can also be significant, even before the construction phase begins.
Heathrow's expansion offers a significant boost to the economy via employment
Within the first 2-3 years, expansion would support between 2,200 and 2,700 jobs.
Over 80% of these jobs will be with a STEM or equivalent background, and 95% of them would be in occupations classed as 'highly-skilled'.
These positions would be of high economic value: we estimate an average wage of £57,000 per supported job.
Our modelling shows that the direct total value of the jobs supported is £110m
