Mustikoppa

A fluorosis affected village

Mustikoppa is a small Village in Mundaragi Taluk in Gadag District of Karnataka State, India.

The village has been facing problems like tooth decay even in infants and bending of back bone in mid-age people.

20 years back, Dr. Nabloti came to this village to test drinking water and found fluorosis content in it.

He shared the problem of the village with the government and asked villagers to not to drink that water till the government takes any precautionary step.

There are 90 households in the village and in every house there are people who has their teeth decayed or bones related issues or both.

Government has been taking preventive measures for this village.

Villagers are getting filtered water from the water-filtration plant installed in a nearby temple.

Tungabhadra river, which is very close, has sweet water; thus becomes another source of drinking water.

Wells in the village are being filled with the Tungabhadra river water.

Some years ago an NGO, BAIF, from Tumkur district came here and started rain harvesting for first time in Gadag district so that people here could get fluorosis free drinking water.

Entire village got rain harvesting and now everyone uses rain water also for the drinking purpose.

But the problems prevail in the village despite these many preventive steps have been taken by government and NGOs.

Assessment of groundwater quality in nine villages of Mundaragi Taluka in Gadag District of Karnataka carried out by M.N.Hiremath , C.B.Shivayogimath and S.N.Shivalingappa from Department of Civil Engineering, Anjuman Institute of Technology & Management, Bhatkal, Karnataka and Department of Civil Engineering, B.E.C.Bagalkot, Karnataka.

From the investigation it was revealed that fluoride concentration is dominant in all the bore well samples of nine villages, and which ranges from 6.9 to 2.3 mg/L.These values are above limits prescribed by various standards, obviously prolonged consumption of drinking water from these villages leads to various health problems of fluoride origin.
