Madras Medical College Protest

Students protested against NEET

Students of Madras medical college protested against National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) and demand justice for Anitha at Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital on Tuesday evening.

Almost 200 medical students gathered and demanded ban on NEET exam, conducted by central government for admission in MBBS all over the nation. They also performed candle march to give condolence to Anitha.

Protests in various parts of Tamil Nadu triggered after Anitha committed suicide at her residence in Ariyalur district last week on Friday. She was upset over not securing admission into a medical college.

"There are students who are socially and economically backward so it becomes very difficult for them to compete with other students who are better than them in both ways. Also many students don't even know about the new exam pattern that has been set in NEET", said Vishnu, a final year student at Madras medical college.
"This protest is not just for Anitha but also for other medical students of Tamil Nadu against NEET. We are protesting here for 2 months and will continue to protest till central government exempt state from NEET. ", said Dr. Prabhu, protesting with students.

The Supreme Court on 22 August turned down the Tamil Nadu government's petition that sought a year’s exemption from NEET. Anitha was a petitioner in the case in the Supreme Court.

Anitha had scored 98% marks in Class 12 and according to the state education department, scored 199.75 out of 200 for engineering and 196.75 for medicine, which would have ensured her a seat in either stream without NEET.
