Winner at UK Private Business Awards raises funding for people in the developing world to help them trade their way out of poverty.
A Newcastle company which helps people invest in the developing world has been named the top social enterprise in the country.
Shared Interest, which last year celebrated its 25th anniversary, has won the social enterprise category at the UK Private Business Awards.
The organisation provides financial services and business support for people in the developing world to help them trade their way out of poverty. With a community of investors and the support of donors and volunteers, it seeks to contribute to a world where justice is at the heart of trade finance.
Shared Interest beat five other social enterprises from around the UK to scoop the top prize.
Its managing director Patricia Alexander said: "We were delighted to win the Social Enterprise of the Year category at an event that attracts over 450 UK entrepreneurs."
“Shared Interest works with thousands of entrepreneurs in the developing world, helping farmers who may not be able to find finance elsewhere. Business is essentially about people. And this is why people in the UK invest in Shared Interest – to help workers create a strong livelihood that will benefit their entire community.”
Other winners at the UK Private Business Awards, which are now in their sixth year, included Portakabin, Annabel Karmel and RateSetter.
