Club Day

Hundreds of Palo Alto High School students will begin to participate in club activities after the first Club Day of the 2016-17 school year on the Quad yesterday. The day offered sign-ups for the various clubs offered on campus. 

During this spirited event, the Parent Teacher Student Association provided free hamburgers and hot dogs. Some clubs played music, a few danced and others wore spirited costumes to lure prospective students to the sign-ups. 

The Wide Variety 

From academic-centered clubs like Model United Nations Club, to extremely unique clubs like Magical Bridge Club there really is something for everyone at Club Day. The 70+ clubs represented reflect the extremely varied and diverse interests of the student body.



The New 

Among the myriad of clubs offered, many new clubs have joined the mix. These clubs include Edom, a new fashion magazine, Ukulele Club, Yoga and Mediation club, Magical Bridge Club and Girls Who Code Club among others.

Among the new clubs, a new fashion magazine, Edom, stands out for its booths unique design. The club leaders, senior club leaders Fe Hmelar and Belle Doughman welcome prospective members with beautiful hand drawn stickers. 

According to Hmelar, Edom hopes to create a place where students with a passion for styling and design can explore fashion journalism at Paly. 

"We just want to have a ton of people interested in fashion join the magazine," Hmelar said. "[We want] creative people that are ready to work and want to produce beautiful pieces of writing."

Future STEM Leaders, a new club ed by seniors Gaby Pelayo and Daniella Maydan, also made its debut at Club Day with a colorful billboard.

According to Pelayo, she hopes Future Stem Leaders Club can be used as a great resource for all students interested in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. 

"We hope that anyone at Paly interested in any kind of STEM career, be that going into medicine or going into computer science engineering joins this club," Pelayo said. "We are really just offering a lot of resources for any person that likes STEM." 

The Spirit 

Despite the tremendous heat, club members flooded the Quad with high energy, excited to show the school what their club is all about. The weather did not deter the infectious spirit of the day, as club leaders dazzled the student body with everything from bright neon signs, to fun dances and costumed mascots.

Thespian Club set out an unusual display on Club day and dazzled prospective students with unique costumes and props. 

According to senior Thespian Club president Nadia Leinhos, the crazy setup is a way to show what the theater spirit is all about, being funky and not afraid to express yourself. 

"I hope that plenty of people sign up," Leinhos said. "I hope that people who haven't even thought about doing theater are now thinking about doing theater because there are a bunch of people out on the quad with mannequins and funky clothes."
