Keith Wyness

Talks to the Birmingham Mail

Aston Villa CEO joined the Birmingham Mail's football editor Mat Kendrick and Gregg Evans for an exclusive chat via Facebook live yesterday morning.

Wyness was asked questions on a range of topics about the club's plans going forward and was typically insightful and forthright in his responses.

We have wrapped most of them up into one neat package for you...

The CEO had plenty to say about the Aston Villa fans, see below...

The fans

Wyness thanked the fans for their never-ending support.

He admitted that he was genuinely taken back by their passion since arriving in the summer.

Wyness formed part of the new-look board when Chinese businessman Tony Xia bought the club last year.

And he also delivered this rousing message for the times ahead:

"We want to take the club forward and make sure we are doing more things first again.

"We're not going to be followers, we're going to be innovators.

"We're going to keep winning on the pitch and we're going to do it with style.

"We want to make this club one where the supporters can be proud again."

Financial Fair Play - what does it mean?

Wyness has explained how Villa are planning carefully to stay in line with Financial Fair Play rules.

Villa spent big this season in a bid to make an immediate return to the Premier League but a mid-season slump effectively ended their play-off hopes.

Wyness admits that promotion had been targeted within two seasons of relegation from the Premier League so extra emphasis will be placed on the next campaign.

"We're okay this season, we’re going to be okay next season, after is when we’re having to plan for," he said.

“If we go up next season, no problem.

“My job is to cover every eventuality. We’re putting plans in to make sure we don’t fall foul of FFP for the season after next.

“If you can keep the money coming in equals the money going out then you’ve got a fair shot at getting things right.

“The plan is creating those extra revenue streams for the year after next and we’ve got good plans.”

Wyness is clearly frustrated with the rules surrounding FFP and explained his thoughts to the Birmingham Mail today:

“FFP is a rule that I’m not too keen on,” he added.

“It discourages people to invest in their own assets which I think is wrong.

“FFP was supposed to be about money distorting the game.

“In the Championship, what you’re actually seeing is the clubs who go up are not the ones who have spent the most, but the ones who have created a team.

“I don’t think money has distorted the Championship in that way.”

Aston Villa 'has probably never been in better financial shape' says CEO

Wyness has told Villa fans: There's no cause for concern over our finances.

Villa recorded a loss of more than £81m for the last financial year and that sparked immediate panic among supporters.

The figures for the 2015-16 period show that with an operating loss of £81.3m the deficit more than trebled, up from £26.6m, before Villa were relegated from the Premier League.

But Wyness, the man responsible for the day-to-day running of the club, told the Birmingham Mail:

"There’s absolutely no cause for concern.

“Since we bought the club we have actually reduced the debt in overdraft facilities.

“And Tony is funding the growth himself out of our own over-funds.

“So the club has probably never been in better financial shape than it is right now."

Wyness on Tony Xia

Dr Tony Xia is very switched on when it comes to all things claret and blue.

Wyness told us: "Tony is probably the cleverest man I've ever met.

"I think with Tony you can see his brain working - he’s incredibly clever

"He doesn’t meddle but is very constructive in his thoughts."

What is Tony like as a dinner guest?

"Great, he can talk about anything, but when he’s here he is immersed in football, in Aston Villa.

"We feed him a lot of data and information and he reads all of it.

"And he has clear opinions and is very constructive with those opinions.”

Wyness also revealed that the owner hates missing a game and lives and breathes the club even when he isn't in the country.

"Steve Bruce is the man to take us forward.
“We understand the depths of the problems and the issues Steve has had to face."

Wyness spoke about the future of Steve Bruce.

He stated: "He is on a rolling contract, there is a period of time in the contract that is always refreshed.

“At any point in time we can terminate that contract with that period of notice.

"Steve is the man to take us forward though.

“We understand the depths of the problems and the issues Steve has had to face.

“There has been a lack of stability and Steve will be given that stability as our manager going forwards."

Safe standing

Wyness says he isn't opposed to the idea of safe standing at football grounds.

He stated: "I've spoke in favour of safe standing. I’ve been to Germany I’ve seen it myself"

"We are looking into it at Villa.

"A committee is in place to assess safe standing and its implications

"The club has been up to Celtic to see it working in Britain.

"And he’s promised a fan consultation.

"Once that work is complete I think we’ll see parts of Villa Park which could see safe standing provided the fans want it”

He added that self standing needs clarification, asking 'what is the definition of a seat?'

Tony Xia has previously spoken out about the issue and again stated that the club are investigating it.

Xia has apparently has inserted two safe-standing areas in new plans for the Holte End. It is not a new revelation that Xia is open to the idea of rail seats at Villa Park.

Back in July last year when asked if he could 'get the ball rolling to make the Holte End safe-standing, Xia replied: "It is a question asked several times. We will discuss it seriously."

THE ROUND BADGE
"A thorny subject, there is a huge cost involved in changing a badge.
"It's something we will always look into this and the commercial team are looking at it.
"Nothing certain about it happening quickly, but maybe sometime in the future."

Loans

Wyness says the club are keeping tabs on all of their loan players and there could still be a future for Carles Gil and Jordan Veretout.

Steve Bruce recently went to see Jordan Veretout in action for St Etienne against Manchester United.

Carles Gil, currently on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, will be carefully considered when plans for next season begin.

Bruce was unable to recall either player in January as part of the arrangements made prior to his October arrival.

Wyness says both players and all loan players are being carefully monitored.

He stated: "Are Carles Gil and Jordan Veretout suitable for the Championship?

"We are very aware of these players and have a loan manager who watches all of the players out on loan.

“We would have a lot of eyes on the future of these players and they are big decisions going forward.

"Certainly the door is not closed."

"I love a transfer window."
