"What running a Great Out-tours franchise has meant to me…"
I run my own successful Forest School and Forest Activities business in West Sussex as a Forest School Leader (Level 3). Although I run Forest School sessions during term time, this is often hard work to find and is often not paid as well as I would like. This will be a familiar story for many Forest School leaders. I run Forest Activity sessions in the holidays, but I am limited as to how many days I can offer, by my needs to spend time with my own children. In this line of work, a long term regular income is hard to achieve.
Setting up your own company can be confusing having to deal with risk assessment, trialling lesson plans, taking on employees or free lancers, and often you can feel isolated. Working with the Great Out-tours (G.O.T) and joining the G.O.T family has given me support and encouragement. Most of the background hard work has been done. You are given the lesson plans with all activities having been rigorously road tested, the risk assessments are done, the insurance is in place and you have access to a fabulous booking system. I have enjoyed feeling like part of a team and supported, and this has had a knock on effect giving me renewed enthusiasm and confidence within my own company.
Let's be clear, this is NOT Forest School, but it does give children access to the out doors through it’s seasonally themed activities. The sessions offer opportunities for education, practical skills development, team work and a whole heap of fun! The schools love it, as it is a great complement to their offering, giving support to the curriculum and after school care. I have found that rather than conflicting with my Forest School business, it has dovetailed beautifully. The two businesses complement each other. More to the point, the children love it.
A summer season activity recall: Apple Pressing. Seeing them take home their freshly pressed apple juice and excitedly telling their parents at collection how they did it was a delight.
I have run two successful clubs this year and in 2018 I am looking to extend the club to another two schools. They have given me a regular additional income throughout the year, which is always welcome. This is a business that you can keep small if that what suits you, but if you have big ideas and want multiple clubs across your area, the franchise can easily accommodate your dreams.
Being a part of The Great Out-tours has been great fun and very rewarding in 2017 and I am looking forward to growing my business in 2018.
