Carbrook mega resort blindsides residents

By Georgia Garland

Carbrook residents were not notified of a proposed 1500 dwelling resort which is now in its final stages before council submission.

The Lakes resort which will include a convention centre, childcare centre and chapel is proposed for development on Reidel Road, Carbrook where it will overlook the Logan River.

Reidel Road resident Chris Johnson said she was never personally notified about the proposal.

"No one has spoken to us in any shape or form," she said.

"We found out through the media when they put the sign up on the property."

Detrimental Effect

Mrs Johnson said the proposed resort would have a large effect on her and her family.

"How do you put it into words," she said.

“There's going to be a lot more traffic, there’s going to be a lot more noise and congestion.

“We’re not in the way of progress but that’s right on our doorstep.”

Mrs Johnson said she moved to Carbrook because it was semi-rural.

“We’re going to lose the country atmosphere and the country feel which is the reason we chose Carbrook,” she said.

“Whether you have animals or you don’t have animals, you’re on property for a reason, because you want to be away from the congestion of the immediate city,” she said.

THE RESORTS MASTER PLAN

Councillor Power in opposition

Division 10 Councillor Darren Power, representing Carbrook, is opposed to the development and said he is trying to gather negative opinions to show the council.

"I am getting as much media attention as possible to make every one aware of the situation so that we get as many negative submissions as possible," he said.

“I am also trying to show up through the minister, that if this application is approved by council, it is a stupid decision as far as planning is concerned.”

Councillor Power said the proposed resort would create additional urban sprawl in Carbrook.

“There is no infrastructure out there and the resort creates more urban sprawl,” he said.

Councillor Power said the developers, Chinese company Australian SN International Investment Group, were waiting on the council's decision.

"The developers currently have their town planning application on advertisement," he said.

“Once this finishes, council will then go through all the submissions from the public, council planning officers will then write a report and the council will vote on it.

“We are looking at somewhere between 2 and 6 weeks for this to happen,” he said.

"Have your say"

Neighbours take action

Mrs Johnson said both her and her neighbours were taking action.

"We're going online this weekend to oppose and I’ve heard from a couple of the other neighbours that they are doing the same," she said.

“None of us are allowed to sub divide yet they can put a big resort like that up, it doesn’t make sense to us.

Mrs Johnson said relocating was not an option.

“If it goes ahead we will just have to deal with it the best we can, which is the hard part,” she said.

Logan Mayor receives funds from developer

Owner of Australian SN International Investment Group Liansheng Yue previously donated $63,000 to Logan Mayor Luke Smith.

Mr Yue donated the funds via Australian Yues International Development Group, an unregistered company at the time.

Mayor Smith is in support of the proposed resort at Carbrook.

In an ABC article Mayor Smith said Mr Yue was aware, despite the donation, that he could not help him.

"They did know that I couldn't help them once I was mayor because they donated, but they still wanted me and my leadership this term," Mr Smith said.

Australian SN International Investment Group was not available for comment.
