HIGHER EDUCATION

The Higher Education & Research Bill delivers important reforms to ensure our world class higher education sector remains amongst our greatest national assets and delivers for everyone.

"I look forward to the enactment of this legislation which will do much to protect academic autonomy and have a positive impact on the health of our university sector" - Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice Chancellor, Cambridge University

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will be established as a single, strategic body that will bring together the 7 Research Councils, Innovate UK and the research and knowledge exchange funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

With a combined budget of more than £6 billion, UKRI will be a major voice for UK research & innovation in the UK and globally.

"Funding from UKRI will boost cooperation among the research councils; allow a more flexible interdisciplinary approach to global challenges and position research at the heart of a new industrial strategy."

Venki Ramakrishnan
Royal Society

"Bringing Innovate UK's business-facing perspective into UKRI can bring strategic advantages and should be used to build partnerships, creating the best conditions for fast growing, dynamic businesses to thrive."

Josh Hardie
CBI

"The creation of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) presents a real opportunity to join up and enhance our already world-beating work on research and innovation and to engage business much more strongly into the agenda."

Phil Smith
Chair Cisco UK & Ireland and Chair Innovate UK

"The research section of the HER Bill has been strengthened, particularly in the support for the Haldane Principle. The creation of UKRI, if properly implemented, can drive UK research forward and will boost the voice of science in government."
