The First 100 Days:
The Department For Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

 


The first 100 days have been busy for the newly formed Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and this is our opportunity to share some of our key moments with you.

On July 15th Greg Clark met astronaut Tim Peake along with executives from the space and aero sectors at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow

The visit coincided with the news that Government and industry had committed to providing almost £365 million of funding for new aerospace technologies, further enhancing the UK's reputation as a world leading aircraft design and manufacturing hub.

On the 16th August Greg Clark gave the world's largest offshore windfarm, Hornsea Project Two, development consent

The windfarm will deliver low carbon electricity to around 1.8 million UK homes and create up to 1,960 construction jobs. The Government is making £730 million of financial support available for renewable electricity generation this Parliament, sending a clear signal that the UK is open for business.

On the 24th August a team led by UK scientists announced the discovery of a new planet. Proxima b was found using facilities at the government-funded European Southern Observatory

On the 1st September scientists moved into the BEIS-funded world-leading Crick Institute

On 20th September Prime Minister Theresa May announced the ratification of the Paris Agreement in her maiden speech at the United Nations General Assembly

The Government is determined to tackle climate change to help create a safer and more prosperous future for us all. That is why the Prime Minister has started the ratifying process of the landmark climate deal signed in Paris. We have also set the level for the fifth carbon budget, which limits emissions to an annual average reduction of 57% over 2028-2032

On the 27th September Secretary of State gave his first Industrial Strategy speech to the Institute of Directors Annual Conference

On 29th September the final documentation to enable Hinkley Point C to go ahead was signed by Business Secretary Greg Clark, the Chairman and CEO of EDF and the Chairman of CGN

   On the 1st October we introduced the National Minimum Wage rise. This means that young workers earning the National Minimum Wage are set to receive a pay rise of up to £450 a year

On 13th October we announced that the number of UK businesses had reached a record high. We also launched the consultation of the Small Business Commissioner

On 16th October construction officially started on polar ship RRS Sir David Attenborough, during a ceremonial keel-laying at Liverpool's Cammell Laird's shipyard
