Mountain View Centre:
Looking to the future
In one of the most deprived communities of Wales, a new building is providing the physical framework for a quiet health revolution - which all starts with giving children a better start in life.
The country's first integrated family centre and healthcare hub opened its doors in Swansea in May 2018.
The £2million Mountain View Centre brings together a range of services for children and families with a GP practice and pharmacy, after-school clubs and activities, and a citizens advice bureau.
"Thousands of children and their families have benefited from the old children's centre over the years and now that the service has moved into these new modern surroundings, the Mountain View Family Centre will ensure even more will get a great start to life."
Just over a decade since the GP practice's former premises were deemed unfit for purpose, the new integrated complex is a partnership between Swansea Council and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, Assura as major funder and the building's owner, and developer Ashley House.
Key to it all are the services working alongside GPs to help children live healthier lives: parent and toddler groups, after-school clubs, healthy eating and nutrition courses and holiday play schemes. The centre will also be a base for handyman and other outreach services, as well as a foodbank.
The project could be seen as a vanguard for health estates work in Wales, with the Senedd announcing its "biggest targeted investment in primary and community care infrastructure" late in 2017. With a pipeline of a new generation of integrated health and care centres through new-build and improvements to existing buildings, commitment to the provision of more health services closer to home is a clear priority.
Mountain View, with its focus on children's health, is looking to the future of primary care.
