With its striking flashes of colour and sweeping entrance, it's not hard to see why Freshney Green Primary Care Centre has won awards for its design.
Spanning more than 7,000 sqm, housing three GP practices and a range of other services to serve more than 30,000 patients, it's one of the biggest medical buildings of its kind.
But this beautiful building is more than just a pretty face.
The project formed part of a £52m regeneration scheme to transform the Yarborough estate. Along with hundreds of new homes and green spaces, the developers had a vision of a sustainable urban environment - and healthcare infrastructure was a key piece of the puzzle.
Work on the £14m building began in May 2008 and it opened to patients the following autumn. Today, along with general practice for around one-fifth of the North East Lincolnshire population, the space offers a pharmacy, physiotherapy, chiropody, audiology, smoking cessation, NHS dentistry, minor surgery, pain management, dermatology and mental health services.
The building uses sustainable design techniques including solar panels and rain water harvesting features. 50 square metres of solar collectors heat a 4000 litre thermal store for domestic hot water and underfloor heating. Its design innovation earned the building Health Investor magazine's 2010 Property of the Year award.
