Wiston House - Living Sustainably

We are continually seeking to minimise our impact on the environment

How do we become more sustainable?

As part of our continual commitment to improve our environmental performance, we have sought to minimise our impact on the environment in a number of ways over the last decade.

Our Green Tourism Award

We are proud to announce that we have been awarded a Silver Level Green Tourism, under the Green Tourism accreditation scheme.

This is down to the hard work and initiatives we have been working on over the years, and the continued work that our Strategic Sustainability Group continues to focus on.

"...[Wilton Park] have done an excellent job at achieving Silver on their first Green Check on the Green Tourism Programme. There are many good examples of good sustainable and environmental practices onsite. With biomass boilers, switch over to LED Lighting, push taps, dual flush and hippo bags in the cisterns, good use of Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits..." - Green Tourism

Our Environmental Practices

We recycle our food waste through two waste compost machines – with the compost spread on our gardens.

Re-use of materials, waste compaction and compression, recycling of a wide range of materials (glass, plastics, printer cartridges, cardboard, paper) or considerate disposal – reducing waste to landfill to one 1,100 litre bin collected twice per week.

In-house water filtration and bottling facilities – reducing transportation and materials for bottled water from external suppliers.

Installation of low energy lightbulbs all around the House.

Reduction of supplier delivery chains – through using locally sourced products and services wherever practical, and local produce from the Estate gardens.

Meeting our customers' demands and preferences for using environmentally sensitive and Fairtrade products.

Encouraging shared transportation – coordinating conference and local travel.

Recycling of used oil from our kitchen for conversion to biofuel by a local company.

Our Autumn harvest from our Herb Garden produced a variety of gourds, pumpkins and squashes, which were use within our kitchens.

Bioenergy

The installation of a biomass boiler at Wiston House opens up further opportunities for more constructive woodland management.

Biomass Boiler

A KWB 150kW TDS Powerfire boiler, wood chip fuel store, fuel feed system, 1,500 litre buffer tank, expansion tank and flue are located in a containerised boiler house, supplied by Econergy.

Preparation of the wood

Softwood is felled from the nearby Wiston woods and cut. When the wood reaches a moisture content of 20-40%, the logs are brought to Wiston House where they are loaded into a chipper.

Operation

The boiler house is situated 90 metres to the west, naturally screened from the main house.

Dried wood is chipped on site directly into the store.

Heated hot water is transported underground into existing distribution systems, providing hot water and heating in the main house.
