Scotch Whisky: there may be more to it than you think! 

The industry is booming - and brimming with innovation. 

With the help of a UK government grant of £11 million, Edinburgh company Celtic Renewables are  producing low carbon transport fuel from the residue of Scotch Whisky production.

A state of the art biomass plant being built by the Combination of Rothes Distillers uses the by-products of 16 Speyside distilleries to produce electricity. 

The excess power sold to the National grid is enough to power 9,000 homes!

Tomatin's Inverness distillery has installed a  biomass steam boiler, which in its first year has reduced their carbon output by the equivalent of taking 1,200 family cars off the road. 

In March last year, the UK government cut excise duty on spirits by 2%, lowering the tax burden on consumers buying a bottle of Scotch Whisky. 

More than 10,000 people are directly employed by the Scotch Whisky industry.

Scotch Whisky is sold in around 200 markets worldwide and 38 bottles are shipped overseas every second. 

Last year, a new Fair Trade Agreement between the EU and Vietnam removed tariffs from some of the UK's most famous food and drinks products including Scotch Whisky. 

With a trade network that extends to around 100 countries, the UK Government helps thousands of Scottish food and drinks companies export overseas.
