10 reasons to visit Dundee

Dundee is home to Captain Scott's 'Discovery', the first ship built specifically for scientific research into Antarctica. 

Fun fact: a flock of 45 live sheep were taken on the 1901 expedition so the crew could eat fresh meat.

Dundee is also home to the HM Frigate Unicorn, Scotland's only example of a wooden warship. 

Dundee Contemporary Arts is an art gallery, cinema, restaurant and print studio centre - all in the heart of the city. Last year it had its busiest year ever with over 380,000 visitors. 

The infamous 'Cannonball' flume, which (for the brave) ends with a 3.8m drop can be found at the Olympia swimming pool. 

Did you know that it was in Dundee that Mary Shelley started writing 'Frankenstein'? She lived in Dundee between 1812 and 1814.

The McManus art gallery and museum is home to a collection spanning an incredible 400 million years. 

Dundee Repertory Theatre is home to Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rep Creative Learning. It's also the most awarded theatre in Scotland.

Dundee is famous for the three 
Js: jute, jam and journalism. By 1900 the jute industry employed 50,000 people. 

The city was also a whaling port - the whale oil was used to soften the jute fibres.

The 'Beano' and the 'Dandy', two of the UK's most iconic comics, were created by D.C. Thomson in Dundee.

You can have your photo taken with Desperate Dan just outside the Caird Hall. 

In 1706, Dundee physician Dr Patrick Blair performed the UK's first elephant dissection. The animal was part of a touring Indian Elephant Exhibition and collapsed near Broughty Ferry.
