Pepperdine Beach Guide

Summer is steadily approaching, and pretty soon it will be time to turn in those text books for tank tops to hit the beach. 

With Pepperdine being surrounded by countless beaches, it can be overwhelming trying to decide what beach best suits your needs.

The Pepperdine Beach Guide can help with that.

The purpose of this project is to inform viewers of Pepperdine's three closest, most popular beaches. From parking to the best surf spots - this piece covers that.

This piece contains information, pictures, videos, maps, 360 photos and interviews all with the intention of making that decision a little easier.

Beach 1: Malibu Rd Beach

Malibu Road Beach, also known as Ralphs Beach, is located on Malibu Road and is just a one and a half mile, five minute drive away. 


Ralphs Beach has a total of seven public easements. The first entryway to the beach is located just past the shopping center where Ralphs and other storefronts are located. Use public easements two, three and four to find the driest stretches of beach.


Pros: closest beach to Pepperdine's campus, several access points to get to the beach and generally less people than other beaches.

Cons: a lot of seaweed in the water, no public facilities of and the occasional angry home owner

Parking: you can park anywhere along Malibu Road as long as it is not blocking any fire lanes. 

Tip: Ignore the 'Prive Beach: mean high tide line ends 100 feet from this sign.' Ralphs Beach is a state beach open to the general public.

Beach 2: Surfrider Beach

Surfrider Beach can be located at 23050 Pacific Coast Hwy, and is just a two and half mile, eight minute drive from Pepperdine. 

Surfrider Beach is a part of Malibu Lagoon state beach and is located in between the Malibu Pier and the Lagoon. 

Pros: world-famous surf spot, fishing on the pier and 

Cons: rocky beach, many of the surfers that frequent the beach consider it a 'locals only' spot and pretty small stretch of beach to lay out on.

Parking: Surfrider Beach has a fee parking lot right next to the lifeguard tower, or you can park along PCH.

Tip: look out for a sign that tells you what part of the beach is designated for surfing and what part is designated for leisure.

Beach 3: Zuma County Beach

Zuma County Beach is located at 30000 Pacific Coast Hwy and is a 15 minute, eight mile drive from Pepperdine.

Zuma County Beach is an all public beach stretch with know for its wide sands and its long, 4 mile stretch of beach. 

Pros: excellent facilities ranging from volleyball court and fire pits to bathrooms, an ample boardwalk and plenty of space.

Cons: high traffic beach, easy to get lost and farthest distance from Pepperdine's campus.

Parking: Zuma has several fee parking lots all along the beach, or you can park on PCH.

Tip: don't swim between lifeguard towers eight and nine. This area is known for having the most dangerous rip currents on the beach.
