World Rhino Day 2018

WATCH: The SAWC's four-tiered approach to combat rhino poaching.

In recognition of World Rhino Day on 22 September 2018, this video filmed at the Southern African Wildlife College, describes how we help to protect rhino in the Kruger National Park and Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) using our four-tiered approach. And we need your help.

Tier 1: Field Rangers.

Training Field Rangers to operate ethically, effectively, and safely at their highest capability.

Tier 2: K9 Asset.

Adding a force-multiplier. Free running pack dogs can track over 30km in two hours, allowing Field Rangers to be even more effective.

Tier 3: Aerial Support

Using a fixed-wing Savannah aircraft, which helps monitor rhino movements, responds to incursions quickly, flying at low speeds, and tracks the pack dogs from the air, along with helicopter support.
Tier 4: Community Engagement

Integrating the value of protected areas into communities and young generations, including opening opportunities for school-leavers to build careers in conservation, and ensuring communities benefit from wildlife conservation

Although rhino remain under immense pressure, poacher arrests in our area of operation in 2018 have increased dramatically, with a more than 80% success rate in the field.  As a recognised SADC centre of specialisation in conservation education, training and skills development, we are proud to be sharing our four-tiered approach to better equip the conservation sector to manage and conserve the world's remaining rhinos.

"Conservation in southern Africa is facing enormous challenges. We are proud of the role the College is playing in developing the human and social capacity to tackle these challenges effectively, innovatively and with integrity, to the benefit of rhino, people and biodiversity."

SAWC CEO, Theresa Sowry
