At the end of Chapter 4, we learned the "Carbon Gospel" according to Gabe Brown, and the driving role soil carbon plays in nutrition, soil moisture, and farm profit.

Read on to discover the productivity & profit of no-till potatoes, the no-till vegetable garden, the Egg-Mobile and more...

No-Till Potatoes

"To grow no-till potatoes in the garden we spread out some compost, put the seed potatoes on the compost, fired up the tractor and spread a round bale of hay over the potatoes. At harvest time we peeled off the hay and collected the potatoes off the ground The potatoes harvested were a little smaller but clean and healthy. Easy. Works good but have to be careful with the thickness of the hay."  - Gabe Brown

NO-TILL VEGETABLE GARDEN

"We took 30 species of vegetables, 20 species of annual flowers, 20 species of cover crop seeds, mixed them all together, put them in the drill and seeded 30 acres.

"It was absolutely fantastic."

"When the wife asked, 'What do you want for supper?' What ever I tripped over, that was what we ate."

"The garden was all dry-land. Biology in the soil held plenty of moisture –a natural ecosystem in the soil. Mycchorizal fungi moved nutrients and water to the plants. It worked fantastic.

"We took what we wanted and donated the rest to needy families. It's a good project."

"Then after that we ran the grass-finished beef and poultry on it and it worked extremely well."

"We are stacking enterprises."

With that 70 species mix Gabe was adding as much life as possible to the soil.

"I had as much biological impact on that soil in 1 year as it would have in 70 years if I had planted them all as mono-cultures. We are accelerating biological time."

- Gabe Brown

Feeding the Whole

"In nature's economy the currency is not money - it's life."  - Vandana Shiva

"On our operation it is about feeding the whole. We want to feed everything. We don't look at everything as independent. We spend a lot of time paying attention to insects. On all the cover crops and annual crops we grow we want flowering at all time because they are going to attract both pollinator insects and predator insects. I have not used an insecticide since before the turn of the century."

Gabe gives a home to all the predator insects - and they take care of the pests. He says, "It makes absolutely no sense to use insecticides. Sign the back of the check and not the front."

"1,700 beneficial or indifferent insect species for every one pest specie!"
Dr. Jonathan Lundgren, Entomologist

"Focus on life in the soil, which drives nutrient cycling."

"We also have a tremendous amount of wild-life on our operation seeking healthy habit. We are now in the rapidly growing city jurisdiction of Bismark, North Dakota and the wildlife know where they have a healthy home."  - Gabe Brown

Livestock

"We have 350 cow/calf pairs, 400 to 800 stocker cattle, grass finished beef, an ewe flock and grass-finished lamb. We run them together to try and mimic the natural ecosystem."

"There are no longer bison in our area. We have cattle, sheep, and broilers. We were limited somewhat because there was no slaughter facility in our area. We were limited to 999 broilers which was the limit on what we want to slaughter ourselves. We run broilers on the cover crops.

"We get $5.00/lb for broilers... most profitable enterprise on our operation."

Pastured Pork

Gabe and his family farrow their own in pastures and sell pastured pork. "We produce a lot of grain and prefer to market it through the hogs and chickens and to other producers who want to buy healthy grain."

The operation has been non-GMO for more than 9 years. However, they are not certified organic, because:

"I don't think I should have to pay somebody for what I already know. We prefer to self-certify. Our ranch is open to customers at all times to see what we are doing."

"I am producing cash grains with all these other enterprises on top of that. I will produce way more calories per acre than any standard conventional production model of mono-cultures. There is no way they can produce as many calories per acre as I can."

"Feeding the world is no problem if we change our mindset."  -Gabe Brown

The Egg-Mobile

The Chicken Trailer

The family also has layers. Gabe's son takes old stock trailers, tears out the floors and replaces them with wire mesh and pulls the trailer to the broiler area. The layers take care of the fly problem and spread manure.

Stacking Enterprises to Multiply Your Income

"I can care less about price of individual commodities. We are going to always have something that is profitable because we are taking advantage of the efficiencies of nature."

Stackable Enterprises That Multiply Income:

Cash crops
Lamb
Beef
Education
Poultry
Agri-tourism
Cover-crops
Pork
Hunting
Vegetables
Grazing
Bees

"There are an infinite number of possibilities out there."  - Gabe Brown

"We must remember as producers we are in the business of producing nutrition."

"Our decisions greatly affect human health. Our nation spends more on health care than any other country, yet we are the 42nd healthiest country in the world. We are 1st in cancer , ADD, ADHD, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, auto-immune disease, and obesity. The list goes on and on. Why is that? I am not going to blame it all on producers but we as producers have to take our share of
the blame."

"We have to focus on producing nutrition instead of just yield."  - Gabe Brown

Gabe compared one of his pasture eggs with a conventional store egg.

"Our pasture egg was amazingly better when analyzed."

"On our operation now, our focus is relating soil health to human health. We are starting a testing program of the products we are producing so we can back up our claims."

"In North Dakota there were only 3 processing plants in the state. The waiting list to get an animal processed was over a year. A group of us got together and opened our own processing facility so we can Direct Market all of our products."   - Gabe Brown

Direct Market Everything You Produce

"We are trying to Direct Market everything we produce."

"Nourished by Nature is our trademarked logo. We provide nutrition to people through the natural ecosystem."

"Our meat trailer direct markets to people in Bismark. I thought we were isolated but we can't begin to keep up with demand. Nothing is more gratifying than handing someone a steak and they pay you $20 a pound and thank you for it. That is a good feeling."

Gabe's Time-line to Freedom:

Starting in 1993 we had shallow soils and 1.7% organic matter. We started to no-till.

In 1995 we started to diversify the cash crop rotation and noticed an up-tick in organic matter.

1997 we started really focusing on cover-crops on all crop-land acres and saw another jump in soil health.

In 2006 we started planting multi-species cover crops and started adding mob-grazing and integrating different livestock species on the land. With each thing we did we saw a marked improvement in the health of the land and ecosystem and increased water holding capacity.

Now in 2013 we have a plot of land that has risen to 11.1% organic matter using these principles. We can improve soil health much much faster than what we used to think possible. Its just a matter of following the principles of nature.

If you have healthy soil you are going to have clean water, clean air, healthy plants, healthy animals and healthy people.

That's what its about on our operation. How do we produce a healthy ecosystem and equate it to healthy humans?

"In the long term, the world can only survive if it lives like nature does. Many smaller units of governance, and a collection of super islands with some separation, quick decision-making, and visible implementation. Lots of Switzerlands, that's what we need. What we need is not leaders, we don’t need them. We just need someone at the top who doesn’t mess the system up."

Recap

Remember these 5 keys to build healthy soil & turn dirt into dollars

Remember!

The Five Keys to Build Healthy Soil

and

Turn Dirt into Dollars

1) No-till or minimum tillage. Least amount of mechanical soil disturbance possible.

2) Armor on the soil surface. Cover the soil all the time. Never have bare soil.

3) Diversity. Nature is diverse. Mono-crops don't appear in nature. Use diversity above and below ground.

4) Living root in the ground as long as possible.Use diverse cover crops to keep living roots in the ground as long as possible.

5) Animal impact. Animals are an important part of a healthy ecosystem. Mob-grazing is effective in accelerating healthy soil formation.

The five principles scale freely from the 5000 acre operation to the small garden plot. You can create more living wealth and cash flow for yourself with nature's model, instead of the "conventional" industrial model spewing an endless stream of empty calories from toxic soil devoid of all life.

Yes nature's model can feed the world (if you have drunk the globalist Kool-Aid) but I would start  first to feed family, tribe, community and local redoubt. You don't have to go head-to-head with the Big Ag, chemical, GMO-seed, government, financial complex. By far the better strategy is to simply "ditch them" and get their tentacles out of your life. Get those regulatory regimes off your back by flying under their radar.

A reliable food supply is the foundation of civilization. Food is also one of the oldest weapons of war to control populations and nations.

For us dirt-people, who live in fly-over country and who have survived the vicissitudes of the past decades - those of us who have lost much, suffered long while acquiring a healthy dose of jaded cynicism without being spiritually and physically destroyed - there is new hope and a window of opportunity here at 2017 winter's end.

Gather your native ingenuity to launch those new business endeavors you have kept on the back burner all these years. Aside from mere cheer-leading, call it a message from heaven:

A time to plant and grow rich,

A time to grow great again
&
A time for all things under the sun.
