Darlington Arts Festival kicks of next month with a packed programme of drama, music, comedy and art co-ordinated by Darlington for Culture. Student journalists from Darlington College, NCTJ Diploma will be reporting on the event. Here is a taste of what's to come.

Community Arts Project spring summer exhibition
Crown Street Art Gallery - Exhibition open standard Crown Street Library hours
The Community Art Project provides an opportunity for people with learning disabilities to practice various visual arts activities with guidance and encouragement from a professional artist. Now based at The Bridge, the Community Art Project is part of Darlington Borough Council's Services for People and is funded and managed as part of the Adult Learning Disability Service.
This exhibition comprises a selection of new work from the thirty two people who currently attend the CAP. It includes works in a range of media including acrylic and watercolour painting, drawing, screenprinting, lino-cut and monoprinting and digital art.

Darlington Embroiderers’ Guild members are enthusiastic about all forms of the art and craft of the needle – contemporary and traditional. Monthly meetings are held on first Saturday at Elm Ridge Methodist Church Hall, Carmel Road South.

Travels with a Sketchbook, an exhibition of sketchbooks and drawings by Rita Smith
Temporary Exhibition Gallery, Head of Steam
Included in normal entrance fee.
Drawing and travel are important factors of Rita Smith's practice and produced over many years and miles, these hidden drawings go on public display for the first time. This exhibition at the Head of Steam is an ideal location, given the importance of the history of the railways in helping to open up the world.

Bill Lowery exhibition

Exhibition open standard Town Hall opening
Based in the North-East of England, Bill Lowery began sketching as a child, progressing to oil painting as a teenager. His paintings include still life, abstract, landscapes and portraits, as well as a series of First World War scenes. Bill's main arts passion is sketching, which allows him to pursue his love of the great outdoors, and study the ways in which man has interacted with nature. In the studio he creates more detailed studies, reworking pieces drawn in the field, recreating images from photographs, or formulating imaginative, original sketches. The Town Hall exhibition space opened July 2014 and Bill’s exhibition is the sixteenth to be held there.

Kolbe has been making ceramics for 15 years; he enjoys creating small, curious objects.
Pam Bassington gained a First Class Honours degree in Contemporary Fine Art in 2012. She has exhibited in Cork Street and had her digital image projected onto various buildings in London, as a successful entrant in the 'Kill Your Darlings' competition, a promotion for the Ginsberg film starring Daniel Radcliffe.
Pam makes medium to large pots using coils, preferring an organic and, often, less than symmetrical look. The clay tends to dictate where it wants to go, so, mostly, Pam lets it.
Her images are a result of digital reworking her own photographs. They are printed on material associated with outdoor advertising; lightweight and durable, they are unencumbered by mount or frame.

Building upon the success of last year's event with 'sell out’ audiences, the sixth Darlington Jazz Festival promises to deliver a high quality and diverse program of jazz performances and creativity to the community within Darlington Town Centre.

London based Jazz educator and trumpeter, Matt Roberts will again return to his home town to lead the workshop assisted by tutors performing at the festival. Jazz After Dark
Matt Robert's Quintet
This year’s 'After Dark’ Session will once again be located upstairs at The Voodoo Cafe on Skinnergate. Matt Roberts will lead his very own quintet playing the music from some of the legendary trumpet players such as Lee Morgan and Miles Davis. This gig was a sell out last year, so get down early to take in the jazz lounge atmosphere of the Voodoo Cafe and experience top class jazz performers pushing jazz to the limit!

Darlington Jazz Festival present: 'A third evening of swinging big band music'
Dave O’Higgins and Durham Alumni Big Band
Internationally renowned saxophonist Dave O’Higgins will join the Durham Alumni Big Band directed by Al Wood to bring the music of Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Billy May and many more to the town. The award winning Durham County Youth Big Band will perform in support of the main event commencing at 7.15pm. To celebrate our first concert in this fabulous art deco styled venue, there will be spot prizes presented for the best vintage fashion wear from the swing era or art décor period. Late Night Jam
Saturday night concludes in similar style to last year. Musicians and Jazz lovers alike will migrate from The Majestic to The Quaker House for a 'Late Night' Jam Session on Mechanics Yard. The atmosphere will once again be buzzing with the sounds of modern jazz delighting the packed audiences until the early hours.

The final day of this year's festival will commence at Hash Bar with the intention to widen the range of music performed and will include gypsy jazz influenced music featuring guitarist James Birkett and violinist Emma Fisk. Bringing together their shared knowledge and love of early jazz styles, the duo will present an entertaining, virtuosic and informative programme of music associated with and inspired by the first great jazz violin and guitar partnership. A typical performance includes compositions by Venuti/Lang such as Cheese & Crackers, Sunshine and Black and Blue Bottom; jazz standards of the 20s and 30s; and specially composed originals that explore the duo's sound world. The duo will perform for a 'jazz’ brunch on the Sunday morning.

Vocal Collective and Locomotion Rhythm
Locomotive Rhythm is a new music work by Darlington born music producer, drummer and recording artist Graeme Robinson.
Inspired by walking the lost routes of the earliest passenger railway system in the world, Robinson creates his sonic vision of Locomotive Rhythm through a combination of thunderous drums, specially founded resonant locomotive wheels, which are played as innovative percussion instruments, and a virtuoso jazz-fusion ensemble featuring Phil Taylor (piano), Gavin Bell (bass), Chris Rutherford (guitar) Steve Bone (Saxophone) and Kevin Eland (trumpet). With titles including Brusselton Top, Black Boy Branch, Hopetown, Thrundle, Mr Barningham's Crystal Palace and Scott and Mountain Dynamo, Locomotive Rhythm explores the world-changing catalysts for the industrial and transport revolution brought about by the birth of modern railways. The band will combine with Vocal Collective with specially commissioned words to collaborate on the final piece of the suite.

Darlington Jazz club present its festival finale with what will be a great party atmosphere at the Hash Bar located on Coniscliffe Road. With some of the festival's top jazz performers and support from Durham Alumni All Star Quintet, it promises to be a night not to be missed. Harrowgate Club and Institute Ltd was established in 1907 and moved to its purpose built Club house in 1911, which is a wonderful example of arts and crafts architecture in Harrowgate Hill in Darlington. It is a modern bright club which has disabled access throughout. The Concert Hall has a capacity of 300 and they regularly hold live music events.

Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club has promoted live jazz in Darlington since 1996. From ragtime to swing, through the hot dance music of the 1920s, to the revivalist years of the 1950s and 1960s, with perhaps some be-bop and jive, they try to provide a programme with something for everyone. Jazz has always been about entertainment and connectivity between musicians and the audience but most of all it’s about tapping your feet and enjoying yourselves.
St Augustines Parish Centre in Larchfield Street is the home of Darlington New Orleans Jazz. Lunchtime sessions are held the first Saturday of the month 12:30 till 3pm.
There is free onsite parking, comfortable seating accommodation, and a well-stocked bar. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments but please purchase drinks at the bar.

Retired British spy, George, is living out his twilight years mostly in a drunken haze, in a town called Torrevieja in Spain, until he is dragged back into the business by a former colleague from MI6. George is enticed by his past and blackmailed into taking on board a case where a crooked Ambassador's Children are kidnapped and held ransom by an international Group.

Linda Smith lectures at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. What happens when a fantasist with a fading memory recalls events from years ago?
Frankie Abbott now in a care home, is helped by Marion one of the carers to remember.
The fun starts as the mother-smothered, big talking buffoon reverts to a past littered with guns, girls and gangsters.
David Barry played the hapless Frankie Abbott in the 60s and 70s sitcoms “Please Sir!” and “The Fenn Street Gang” and has now written this bitter sweet comedy that follows what has happened to Frankie 40 years on. This will be the first time that David has put on the leather jacket to play Frankie in more than 40 years. David is now a published crime writer and also has a weekly show on a Saturday on Channel Radio called “David Barry's Imaginarium”.
Anita Graham is playing Marion the carer. Anita is a West End stage star and her TV and film credits include the BBC sitcom “ Terry and June” and “Confessions Of A Window Cleaner”.
The play went to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016 and was awarded a 5 star critically acclaimed review in “The Scotsman” and “The Edinburgh Evening News”.
It also was also in “Arthur Smith’s Top 5 Picks of The Edinburgh Fringe” on BBC 4.The play is 50 minutes long and will be followed by a Q&A with David and Anita.

Young writers (aged 7+) are invited to join author and creative writing tutor Tracey Iceton for this fun, interactive writing and storytelling workshop. There will be the chance to create your own storybook with advice on writing characters, developing plot, using imaginative language and including action, speech and description in your stories. There will also be chance to read your stories and enjoy some storytelling with Tracey.

No Name Theatre Group presents Communication Breakdown

An offshoot of the Inkerman Writers, No Name Theatre is an emerging theatre company based in Darlington and formed by local writers Angela Pickering, Lesley Blundell and Sandra Spears whose aim is to write and produce popular and challenging theatre and bring to you the audience, stories in a changing, playful and dynamic medium. The show comprises the script reading of three short plays linked by the theme of communication and how it changes through life.
Play one – Text Lessons. Two girls text talk boyfriends and revenge. It tells the story of two teenage girls challenged by their social class. As is the modern way, they use text talk to communicate, all explained by an interpreter
Play two – Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. Three sixty year old men who have remained friends since school days discuss women, holidays and a guilty secret. Their relationship has been constant through non-communication and shows how opening up can unsettle the balance.
Play Three – Waiting Game. Set in a care home, three elderly ladies talk to each other and to themselves about tea, cake and life.
