Lansdowne College: Autumn Term Review

A look back at some highlights from the first term

1. Thorpe Park trip

We kicked the term off with a trip to Thorpe Park giving all the new students the perfect opportunity to get to know one another.

It was a fantastic day out made even better by the beautiful weather!

2. Halloween Talent Show and Party

Organised by the Student Council, the Halloween talent show and party was a roaring success and a great start to fundraising at Lansdowne. Students raised £500 for 'Save the Children', a charity which works to save children's lives and fight for their rights around the world.

Partygoers were welcomed with pizza and soft drinks before taking their seats to enjoy the performances. A variety of hidden talents were revealed amongst both students and staff with highlights including Reeni's singing, Onon's relatable song "Mathematics" and a breath-taking piano recital.

Students put a huge effort into their costumes with many weird and wonderful outfits on show.

Thanks to the Student Council for hosting such a fantastic evening!

3. First talk in our lecture series: Inspiring girls in science

Dr Inés Pineda-Torra, a senior lecturer in the division of Medicine at UCL, visited the college to talk to the students about the challenges women face in science, her area of research and how she has progressed throughout her career.

Keep an eye out for posters about upcoming talks next term!

4. Second fundraising event of the term: Sponsored walk along Regent's Canal

Students and teachers took part in an 8 mile walk that started at Lansdowne College and followed Regent's Canal through the picturesque St. John’s Wood and Regent’s Park.

The day was a huge success and raised an impressive £408 for Save the Children.

5. Principal Mark Love represents UK independent colleges in China

The principal, Mark Love, was invited by the British Council to visit three key cities in China and explain to parents, students and governmental education authorities how a sixth form college is different from a school. Mark received a warm and kind welcome from the Chinese hosts who were very keen to understand how sixth form colleges provide such a successful educational environment without the rigidity and formality found in the majority of schools.

6. Success in UK Mathematics and Physics Olympiads!

This term has not all been about fun! Students achieved brilliant results in the British Physics Olympiad and UK Mathematics Challenge.

Each competition is entered by over 1000 students from across the UK, designed to discover the top young mathematicians and physicists in the country.

Lansdowne students have been awarded gold awards in both competitions meaning that they have qualified for the next rounds to be held early next year.

7. Students start to receive some fantastic university offers
