the story continues...

In the current heatwave, it's now hard to believe that last winter the 'Beast from the East' and 'Storm Emma' gave Gloucestershire's roads a battering, with the most extreme winter weather conditions seen in the county for many years.

We swung into action launching 'Operation Road Rescue’ to prioritise fixing the roads that had major damage caused by the severe weather.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who went the extra mile to keep Gloucestershire moving and help keep residents safe.

Gloucestershire County Council is investing £150 million into our roads, effectively doubling the resurfacing programme over the next four years, to help keep our county moving – our biggest ever investment.

the statistics

• Gloucestershire County Council manage over 3,300 miles of road in the county.

• Last winter we salted and snow ploughed nearly 100,000 miles – that's equivalent to 4 times round the Earth's equator!

• During Operation Road Rescue we repaired 18,182 defects between 1st March – 30th April with an average of 30 crews out on the county's roads every day.

• Our highway safety inspectors are out on the network everyday looking for damage and following up on customer reports.

• The county council has recently allocated an additional £3.869 million for Gloucestershire's highways capital budget.

• We have around £20m of larger scale maintenance work planned for this year (double the usual amount) of which two thirds is resurfacing. This larger scale work has now started and will help us make major improvements to our roads.

major projects

Here we take a look at some of the ways the £150m is being spent by focussing on the major projects currently underway in the county:

Arle Court Bus Priority scheme site is located on the A40 westbound in Cheltenham from the junction with Whittington Road to the Arle Court Roundabout itself. Improvement works include, widening of the A40 westbound carriageway west of Whittington Road from two to three lanes to include a new bus lane. Re-surfacing of the carriageway and upgrading of the traffic signals at Whittington Road junction and the provision of Toucan crossings.

A40 Over Roundabout is located to the northwest of Gloucester and is the primary point of entry into the city for vehicles travelling from the west. Junction improvement works include, A417 (from Maismore) widening of the southbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line. A40 (from Longford) widening of the westbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line; and the addition of a third lane around the A40 roundabout.

Metz Way to Abbeymead Avenue - Highway & Signal Improvements

The overall aim of the scheme is to improve traffic flows along the Metz Way - Abbeymead Avenue route corridor which links  Coopers Edge and Gloucester City Centre. Local junctions on the route will be upgraded and the scheme will also provide better opportunities to shift from car use to walking, cycling and public transport.

The scheme will reduce traffic queues and congestion, improve bus journey times, apply the latest technology to existing traffic signals, improve cycling facilities, and upgrade existing pedestrian crossings.
