Operation Road Rescue –
the story so far

Operation Road Rescue is still going strong with 18,182 defects repaired between 1st March – 30th April and an average of 30 crews out on the county's roads every day.

Thank you to everyone for your patience.

This is the story so far…

Keeping Gloucestershire Moving

Operation Road Rescue has been concentrating on fixing the roads that have major damage caused by the severe weather from earlier this year. Our highways crews have made excellent progress so far and are continuing to fix the defects on our road network. Our safety inspectors are out on the network everyday looking for damage and following up on your reports.

We will receive an additional £0.5m as part of government pothole and flood resilience funding. This is in addition to the £1.5m already received and included in the council's 2018/19 budget. We have over £20m of larger scale maintenance work planned for this year (double the usual amount) of which two thirds is resurfacing. This larger scale work will help us make major improvements to our roads.

major projects

Our large scale resurfacing programme is now underway with vital stretches of road already resurfaced:

• A417 Over Causeway Gloucester - crews laid over 3000 tonnes of material along the 900m stretch of road.

• A4173 Stroud to Gloucester (currently ongoing) - crews will use 6,425 tonnes of long-wearing asphalt with high skid resistance.

• A430 between Bruton Way and Trier Way Gloucester - significant patching completed in preparation for a new surface layer to be applied this summer.

Upcoming resurfacing projects

We will be maintaining the momentum as spring continues into summer with further major resurfacing projects already lined up:

• A4019 Tewkesbury Road Cheltenham

• A46 between Stroud and Pitchcombe

These works are being carried out by Tarmac our new major resurfacing contractor.

Major improvement works

We have also started some major improvements to the county's road network which will continue in the next few weeks:

The A40 Over Roundabout is located to the northwest of Gloucester and is the primary point of entry into the city for vehicles travelling from the west.

The following junctions are being improved:

• A417 (from Maismore) widening of the southbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line.

• A40 (from Longford) widening of the westbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line.

• A40 Roundabout - general: the addition of a third lane around the roundabout.

The Arle Court Bus Priority scheme site is located on the A40 westbound in Cheltenham from the junction with Whittington Road to the Arle Court Roundabout itself. Improvement works include:

• Widening of the A40 westbound carriageway west of Whittington Road from two to three lanes to include a new bus lane.

• Re-surfacing of the carriageway.

• Upgrading of the traffic signals at Whittington Road junction and the provision of Toucan crossings.
