#yourhighways
keeping Gloucestershire moving...

Gloucestershire County Council is investing £150 million into our roads, effectively doubling the resurfacing programme over the next four years, to help keep our county moving – our biggest ever investment.

We know that the county's road network is important to residents and business; from making essential journeys including getting to medical appointments and making necessary shopping trips, as well as for council business; transporting waste and helping council staff deliver services around the county.

The county council is taking more control of the way it maintains its highways; moving away from one provider to three for maintenance, resurfacing and highways professional services. This new way of working will better meet the future needs of our county's roads, and help us to maximise the £150 million investment in our roads.

The county's investment in #yourhighways is more than just resurfacing!

The county council is committed to keeping Gloucestershire moving. On a regular basis your highways crews are out and about throughout the whole of the county fixing faults, ditch clearing, tree pruning, sign cleaning, pothole fixing and gully clearing.

#yourhighways major projects

Here we take a look at some of the ways the £150m is being spent by focussing on the major projects that have recently been completed.

A40 Over Roundabout is located to the northwest of Gloucester and is the primary point of entry into the city for vehicles travelling from the west. Junction improvement works include, A417 (from Maismore) widening of the southbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line. A40 (from Longford) widening of the westbound approach to the roundabout entry to provide three lanes at the junction stop line; and the addition of a third lane around the A40 roundabout.

Arle Court Bus Priority is located on the A40 westbound in Cheltenham from the junction with Whittington Road to the Arle Court Roundabout itself. Improvements include, widening of the A40 westbound carriageway west of Whittington Road from two to three lanes, including a new bus lane. Re-surfacing of the carriageway and upgrading of the traffic signals at Whittington Road junction and the provision of Toucan crossings.

Ongoing major projects

Metz Way to Abbeymead Avenue - Highway & Signal Improvements

The overall aim of the scheme is to improve traffic flows along the Metz Way - Abbeymead Avenue route corridor which links Coopers Edge and Gloucester City Centre. Local junctions on the route will be upgraded and the scheme will also provide better opportunities to shift from car use to walking, cycling and public transport.

The scheme will reduce traffic queues and congestion, improve bus journey times, apply the latest technology to existing traffic signals, improve cycling facilities, and upgrade existing pedestrian crossings. More information is available on our website

A417 Over Causeway - Bridge Maintenance

The Over Causeway is used everyday by hundreds of commuters and is starting to show signs of tiredness. To help bring it back to life, highways crews will be replacing the old with the new, 14 of the new in fact. Fourteen joints will be installed over three weeks, with a total length of 102 metres. A total of 640m of drains will also be cleaned; helping water to drain away and reduce the risk of flooding.

Update on the Cross Keys roundabout improvement scheme

The work, set to begin in spring 2019, will improve the Cross Keys roundabout at the junction of the A38 and B4008 and improve links between Gloucester City and junction 12 of the M5 motorway. As part of the scheme, approach and exit lanes will be widened to increase capacity at the roundabout, new traffic lights will be installed on the A38 and footpaths will be improved.
