Operation SHADER

Two Years On

Two years on from the Parliamentary vote to support the Iraqi government in the fight against Daesh, the 67 member Global Coalition continues to make significant progress.

In 2014, the Global Coalition help halt Daesh in its tracks.

By 2015 Daesh were pushed back even further.

Now in 2016, they've lost control of key strategic areas across Iraq including Rabiyah, Mount Sinjar, Tikrit, Sinjar City, Bayji, Hit, Ramaidi, Fallujah and Qayyarah.

Daesh are on the back foot, and now hold only 10% of Iraqi territory.

Though Syria is altogether more complex, the Syrian Democratic Forces have also made significant gains, liberating places such as Al Hasakah and As Shadadi in the east of Syria.

The Global Coalition continue to focus on Syria and drive Daesh out even further.

The UK has driven Daesh out of nearly half the territory it once occupied in Iraq and over 20% in Syria.

Thanks to the effort of the Global Coalition in support of those on the ground, thousands of people have been freed from Daesh's rule.

887,000 refugees have been able to return to their homes.

However this war is not over and many other people are still under threat.

The Armed Forces continue to play a leading role in the ongoing commitment to defeat Daesh, continuing its military efforts in Iraq and Syria to keep Britain safe.

The UK's involvement has been significant in the overall progress so far: providing military support, vital intelligence and reconnaissance in the coalition's mission to find and destroy Daesh.

The Royal Air Force has so far conducted over 1,000 airstrikes against Daesh.

Using precision guided weapons, including the state of the art Brimstone missile, the Royal Air Force has destroyed key operational targets, hiding places and even the terrorists themselves.

The UK's commitment to on-going airstrikes is only second to the USA in the global coalition.

Meanwhile, at sea, The Royal Navy are working alongside the coalition to protect the US and French carriers based in the Gulf.

ON ROUTE TO HELP SUPPORT THE GLOABL COALITION AGAINST DAESH.

With the Iraqi Army taking the lead to liberate their country, the UK has offered support by training over 25,000 Iraqi forces so far.

500 British Army personnel are providing vital training in military, medical and engineering skills.

However, this is not a war that can be won with military force alone.

The UK has also been battling the ideological impact of Daesh, through the creation of a coalition communications cell to help challenge Daesh's toxic narrative.

These developments are making a crucial contribution to our fight against Daesh, ultimately contributing to the security of people in the UK.

As the coalition's focus turns to the city of Mosul, the RAF are providing air support for the Iraqi troops on the ground.

Looking ahead to 2017, the coalition will continue to reassess its effectiveness to ensure its partners on the ground receive the support they need.

Two years on and the coalition is still making significant progress, but this remains a hard fight which Britain remains resolutely committed to.
