Four towns and cities shortlisted to host Great Exhibition of the North

The exhibition, which will run for at least two months, will showcase the great creative, cultural and design sectors across the whole of the North, and boost investment and tourism in the region. Read the news release on GOV.UK and social media showcase.

Nine strong bids were submitted with Blackpool, Bradford, Newcastle-Gateshead and Sheffield being shortlisted to host the Exhibition, announced by Matt Hancock, Minister of State for Digital and Culture on 29 July 2016.

With seven miles of beaches and a 500 metre North Pier,  Blackpool also plays host to a Grand Theatre which has been a cultural hub for 122 years.

Named as the first UNESCO City of Film, Bradford is also home to a rich offering of museums including the Bradford Industrial Museum and National Media Museum.

United by seven bridges spanning a stunning riverscape, Newcastle and Gateshead is a vibrant visitor destination thanks to iconic landmarks including the Angel of the North and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

With its rich industrial history, Sheffield offers the largest Theatre Complex outside of London alongside its famous Winter Gardens that house over 2,500 plants from around the World.


This shortlist will be assessed by the Great Exhibition board before a final selection is made by Ministers in the autumn. Find out more.
