A Derby Day in the life of Sunderland Borough Bartender

The Borough pub in Sunderland city centre is one of the top drinking spots in Sunderland on Derby Day.

However, the pub is only one of few pubs that do not actually show the game. But this does not mean it is not busy.

Russell Field, a member of the bar staff at the Borough, has worked previous Derby Days and will be other side of the bar again for the game on Sunday.

He said: "The shift starts at 10 o'clock in the morning and it’s pretty much from the get go, and all the staff work for 15 hours right through until 1 o’clock in the morning."

This Sunday Wearside rivals Newcastle will host Sunderland at St. James’ Park for their game in the Barclays Premier League.

Although the game will be played in Newcastle, there will be no shortage of fans staying in Sunderland to watch the game.

Russell did describe the street outside the pub as 'absolute bedlam’ but did say that the good door staff and police presence kept the situation under control.

The match will kick off at 1.30pm this Sunday at St. James’ Park, on the same day as the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City will be shown in most pubs and bars in Tyne and Wear area.
