Easter events cancelled

Significant bad weather over Easter causes event cancellations and flood warnings issued

Rain, sleet and snow has seen event cancellations and attractions closed over the Easter Bank Holiday.

Racing events had been called off for fear of injury to the horses and riders, while other events closed because of flooding.

Two National Trust properties had to turn visitors away on Sunday.

Erddig Hall on the Shropshire/north Wales border closed because its car parks were waterlogged. Scores of families went instead to enjoy the Easter egg hunt at the nearby Chirk Castle, but staff there had to turn people away in the afternoon because its car parks were full.

Dave Throup from the Environment Agency said: "There are a lot of river locations where levels are high and flooding is possible and this could change as overnight rain works through into other rivers.

Heavy rainfall was forecast for most parts of England

Contingency planning and continued monitoring of expected and current weather is essential for safety management of events. Cancelling or postponing events may be frustrating for some attendees however, public safety is always the highest priority. The ever changing weather this spring and the number of events cancelled proves that sound planning and management is critical.
